This demonstration shows the conversion of mechanical energy into thermal energy. As the crank is turned, the mass is lifted but hovers over the ground as the rope slips. This heats the drum due to friction. A thermometer records the change in temperature.
Setup:
Clamp the apparatus to the demo table.
Wrap the string attached to the mass around the drum and stretch the rubber band over the cork.
Set up the doc cam to view the thermometer.
Turn the crank and watch the temperature increase.
Notes:
The mass is very heavy. Be careful not to drop it.
