This demonstration shows conservation of energy for a pendulum. When the pendulum is released, even though its path is interrupted, the pendulum still returns to its original height.
Setup:
Setup the system as shown in the image above.
Pull the pendulum back to a height corresponding to the 20 cm mark on the scale. Release the pendulum. It will swing and hit the bar, but the mass will continue to travel up to a height corresponding to the 20 cm mark.
Notes:
It is best to use these values as different heights and setups could lead to slack in the string.
