This demonstration visually shows the magnetic field around a straight current-carrying wire. When the power supply is off and there is not current in the wire, all the compasses point in the same direction (north). When the power is turned on and current runs through the wire, the compasses reorient themselves to show the rings around the wire where the magnetic field is. The closer to the wire the stronger the field.
* Equipment seen in the video may vary from equipment used in ND Demonstrations. See information and images below for ND equipment and setup.
Setup:
Place the equipment on the lab table. Connect the platform with wire to the high current power supply using the high current cables. Arrange the compasses around the straight wire on the platform. Connect the webcam to the projector system and place it so it views the compasses around the wire.
Turn the knob on the power supply to the desired current. Press the power button on the power supply and hold it for a few seconds. Watch the compasses realign around the wire.
Notes:
The power supply is operated by a push button that must be held in to remain on. Do not leave the current on for too long or the wires will get hot.
