This demonstration shows how diffraction patterns change with slit width. The laser is shined at a single slit to create a diffraction pattern on the viewing screen. As the slit width is changed, the diffraction pattern visibly changes.
* Equipment seen in the video may vary from equipment used in ND Demonstrations. See information and images below for ND equipment and setup.
Setup:
Place the ring stand on the lab table with laser and variable single slit plate. Setup a viewing screen in front of this system. Connect the webcam to the projector and set it up to show the viewing screen. Align the laser to hit the single slit.Turn on the laser and view the diffraction pattern on the viewing screen. Rotate the screw on the slit system to change the width of the slit and see the pattern change.
Notes:
This can be done with the red, green, or violet laser.Be careful not to point the laser at anyone or look directly into the beam.May need to be performed in a darkened room.
