This demonstration shows transverse standing waves in a string. By oscillating a string at different frequencies, one can view standing waves and different harmonics.
* Equipment seen in the video may vary from equipment used in ND Demonstrations. See information and images below for ND equipment and setup.
Setup:
Attach the posts to the demo table. Mount the pulley and string vibrator to the posts.
Stretch the spring over the pulley and attach it to the clamp or hanging mass.
Connect the string vibrator to the sine wave generator using the banana cables.
Starting with the amplitude all the way down, turn on the sine wave generator. Turn down the frequency to the 15 Hertz range. Increase the amplitude and adjust it as necessary to see different standing waves.
Notes:
Do not turn the amplitude up too high as it is bad for the equipment. (You will hear clicking noises when this happens.)
