Chladni Plates

This demonstrates the nodal patterns of a flat square plate and a flat circular plate. A plate is mounted on a mechanical driver through the center. It is sprinkled with salt or white sand and then the function generator turned on to start the mechanical driver. As the plate oscillates, nodes and anti-nodes can be seen as the sand forms a pattern on the plate's surface.

* Equipment seen in the video may vary from equipment used in ND Demonstrations. See information and images below for ND equipment and setup.

Setup:

Connect the function generator to the mechanical driver using the banana cables. Attach a plate to the mechanical driver and place it in the tray. Connect the webcam to the projector and set it up above the plate using the ring stand.

Be sure that the drive arm is unlocked. Sprinkle sand on the plate. Turn on the function generator and adjust the frequency to see different patterns in the sand.
