This apparatus shows the similarities between simple harmonic and circular motion. As the ball spins in a circle, the mass oscillates on a spring. This shows how simple harmonic motion can be visualized as the projection of uniform circular motion onto one axis.
Setup:
Place the apparatus on the lab table.
Unhook the mass and hang it from the spring.
Turn on the circling ball. Pull the mass up even with the top of the circle and release it when the ball is there.
Shine a light on the system to show that the shadows move together. (optional)
