Bimetallic Strip

This demonstration shows solid expansion and how different materials react to changes in temperature. The strip is made of one side brass and one side steel bonded together. As the strip is heated, it will curve towards the steel side because it expands less. If the strip is cooled, it will bend the opposite way. This shows the different expansion coefficients.

* Equipment seen in the video may vary from equipment used in ND Demonstrations. See information and images below for ND equipment and setup.

Setup:

Place the strip and heat gun on the demo table.

Use the heat gun to heat the strip and watch it curve.

The strip may be dipped in liquid nitrogen to see it curve the opposite direction.

Notes:

Be careful as the metal will get hot.
