This demonstration shows a very simple conversion of electrical to mechanical energy. This simple motor is made of a battery, piece of wire, and magnet. All the materials can be easily found and the device assembled at home. The wire has been wound into a coil and hung on a stand made of paper clips. Once the battery is connected to system, the coil will spin because of the force from the magnetic field on the current in the coil.
* Equipment seen in the video may vary from equipment used in ND Demonstrations. See information and images below for ND equipment and setup.
Setup:
Place the simple electric motor setup on the demo table. Place the battery between the bent paper clips and the coil in the bent paper clip cradle. Connect the battery to the setup using the banana cables and alligator clips.
Spin the coil to start the motor. The coil should spin rapidly.
Disconnect the battery when finished.
Notes:
Be careful! The magnet is strong and will easily jump.
