Ice Melting Blocks

This demonstration shows heat transfer, thermal conductivity, and change of state. The two blocks are made of different material. One is aluminum, the other is a high density foam. To the touch, the aluminum feels cooler. When an ice cube is placed on each, the cube on the aluminum block melts faster.

Setup:

Place the two blocks on the demo table with the o-rings on top of them.

Place an ice cube on each block to observe which melts faster.
