This demonstration illustrates the concept of the electric wind. When the Van de Graaff Generator is turned on, candles near it are blown out. Candle flames are greatly composed of positive ions which are repelled from the Van de Graaff and help blow out the candle.
Setup:
Place the Van de Graaff Generator on the demonstration table.
Place the stand with candles nearby so that some candles are close and others are farther away from the generator.
Light the candles.
Turn on the generator and some of the candles will go out, specifically the ones closer to the generator.
Notes:
Be sure to blow out the candles when demonstration is completed.
This can also be done with a small candle on top of the Van de Graaff generator.
