Diamagnetic materials are those which repel both poles of a magnet. This demonstration uses the diamagnetic material pyrolytic graphite to float a magnet. The wood jig has two pyrolytic graphite plates. When a magnet is placed between them, with a lifter magnet (to compensate for gravity) placed above. The system can be adjusted so that the magnet floats in the air between the two plates.
* Equipment seen in the video may vary from equipment used in ND Demonstrations. See information and images below for ND equipment and setup.
Setup:
Place the wood jig on the demo table. Attach the lifter magnet to the adjustment screw. Place the floater magnet between the graphite plates.
Move the adjustment screw up or down until the magnet floats between the plates.
The gap between the plates may be adjusted using the screw on the back of the jig as well.
A camera may be used to view this demonstration as it is quite small.
