Visual Communication Design looks at the way visual language can be used to convey ideas, information and messages in the fields of communication, environmental and industrial design. This course aims to teach students to generate, develop and produce original concepts using the design process while making and presenting their visual communications.
Students apply the creative design process to produce design solutions related to the fields of Communication, Industrial and Environmental design. Students develop skills in design thinking and various drawing methods through the completion of short exercises and extended design brief tasks. Students explore technical drawings, 3D mock-ups and computer-generated concepts.

Design Elements and Principles
Instrumental Drawings (2D and 3D drawing systems)
Freehand and observational drawings
3D model making
Communication design task – Working to a design brief to generate, develop and produce original concepts using the design process while making and presenting their visual communications. Students explore manual and digital methods to refine presentations.
Environmental design task – Architectural plans and elevations are developed in accordance to the Australian Standards. Students create a scaled 3D model of their design.
Industrial design task – Observational drawings, experimenting and practicing rendering skills using various media and materials. Technical drawings will be explored focusing on 2D and 3D drawing systems; third angle orthogonal and isometric drawings.
This subject leads directly into the VCE Visual Communication Design and can also assist in the preparation for VCE Art Making and Exhibiting and VCE Media.
