Year 10 Advanced Physical Education is suited to highly motivated students wishing to gain a deeper understanding of the theoretical concepts that underpin sport and exercise. Student explore performance enhancement in sport through the application of sports science principles, including biomechanics, energy systems, fatigue and recovery. Students participate in a wide-variety of practical activities at school and throughout Bendigo to enhance understanding of the theoretical concepts covered.
Advanced Physical Education involves both theoretical and practical components. Students complete three theory lessons (in classroom) and two practical lessons per week. To consolidate understanding of theoretical concepts, students are also required to complete weekly homework and revision activities.
Advanced Physical Education seeks to extend students beyond the scope of Year 10 Physical Education and is specifically tailored to students wishing to accelerate into VCE Units 3&4 PE in Year 11 or continue into VCE Units 1&2 Physical Education.
Students in Advanced Physical Education investigate the following concepts during both practical and theory classes:
Specific methods for performance enhancement in sport
Aerobic and anaerobic pathways of energy production
Energy system interplay during sport and exercise
Fatigue and recovery of the energy systems
Training the energy systems to improve performance
Introduction to biomechanics
Video and GPS analysis of performance
Practical activities including group and individual fitness activities, resistance training, laboratory tasks, biomechanical analysis, minor and major games (including in-line skating, golf, badminton, croquet, lawn bowls, tennis, cricket, netball, field hockey and basketball)
Practical learning, including regular participation in sport, exercise, recreational pursuits and team challenges
Performance analysis of individual and team sports
Individual and group research tasks
Laboratory exercises
Written reports
Tests
End-of-semester examination
*Please note - Students in Advanced Physical Education are required to complete regular homework tasks, including self-directed revision and set learning activities. Students in Advanced PE are expected to complete a minimum of 1-2 hours of homework outside of class time per week.
Advanced Physical Education is specifically tailored to students wishing to accelerate into VCE Units 3&4 Physical Education in Year 11 or continue into VCE Units 1&2 Physical Education.
Whilst there are no prerequisites for entry into Advanced Physical Education, it is strongly recommended that students complete Year 10 Physical Education 1 in Semester One prior to completing Year 10 Advanced Physical Education in Semester Two.
