Year 10 Mathematical Methods is a subject where students are expected to be able to apply techniques, routines and processes involving arithmetic, diagrams, algebraic manipulation, equations and graphs with and without the use of technology. It is a rigorous subject, where students are expected to rise to the challenge and complete both classwork and homework to consolidate their skills. Students must have a CAS calculator from the start of the semester as this tool will be used to support their learning in every topic.
In Semester One Mathematical Methods, students study from topics including Measurement, Algebra, Probability, Graphing (both linear and non-linear) and Geometry.
In Semester Two, students study from topics including Trigonometry, Indices and Surds, Statistics, Measurement and Algebra.
In both semesters, numerical relationships and patterns are studied, including algebraic and graphical representations. Logical development of ideas is expected, and students need to present their work in ways that show their progression through a problem. The CAS calculator is a tool that enables students to build on the mathematics and apply it to a wider field.
Students are introduced to a variety of ways to learn the material in preparation for their further studies. Class learning activities include:
Text exercises
Calculator tasks
Collaborative working in groups
Quizzes
This subject provides students with a basis for further study in VCE Mathematical Methods and VCE Specialist Mathematics.
