Year 9 Health and Physical Education - Semester 1
Year 9 Physical Education provides students with the opportunity to participate in a wide variety of physical activities designed to develop motor skills, team work and tactical awareness, as well as an appreciation for movement. Students complete a unit of swimming focused on developing greater confidence in aquatic environments and enhancing water safety knowledge and skills. They also participate in archery, netball, fitness training activities, fitness testing, dance, a variety of team building minor games.
Year 9 Health investigates the interrelationship between an individual’s physical, social, mental and spiritual health and their impact on overall health and wellbeing. Students complete a case study investigating local community health organisation, online health services and the services these provide young people. Students also study anatomy and physiology of the musculoskeletal system, including the role physical activity has on the health of this system.
Year 9 Health and Physical Education - Semester 2
Students in Physical Education participate in a range of non-traditional sports, including European Handball, touch rugby, tchoukball and korfball. Throughout practical lessons, students focus on the refinement of movement skills, as well as the transfer of fundamental and complex motor skills between activities. Teamwork, communication, tactical awareness and inclusive practice are also a major focus during these activities. In Term 4, students undertake units focusing on tennis, ultimate frisbee and student-led games.
In Health, students investigate sociological factors influencing participation in sport, including socio-economic status, gender, age, social-norms and motivation. The concepts of positive relationships and sexuality are discussed and unpacked, including concepts such as respectful relationships, consent, gender, online behaviours, physical change and sexually health.
