About this subject
This subject provides students with the opportunity to develop their football skills while building leadership qualities and making a positive contribution to their local community. The course places a strong emphasis on personal growth, teamwork, collaboration and problem solving both on the field and in everyday life.
Whilst AFL is the main sport focus, the primary aim of this subject is to support students in becoming the best version of themselves. Athletic development is important, but personal development comes first. Students will be encouraged to understand and embody the qualities of a holistic athlete — someone who values physical, mental, emotional and social wellbeing as part of their overall growth.
Key knowledge and skills that will be investigated in both a practical and theoretical aspect include:
Styles of game play and tactical awareness
Football specific skill development
Leadership styles and implementation strategies
Effective communication on and off the field
Diet and nutrition for high level performance
Mental health for young adults
Recovery for athletic performance and training
Goal setting and resilience strategies
Expectations of young athletes who are in the program:
Full participation in practical workshops and lessons unless medical exemption
Complete all learning activities during theory sessions
Follow the CMC student code of conduct including uniform requirements, behaviour expectations and the school wide positive behaviour framework
Attend all whole school events
Please note – selection in this program does not guarantee students selection in our school sporting teams.

In addition to online subject selection, students wishing to enter into Year 9 Football and Leadership Development MUST complete and submit a application form. Only students who submit an application form by the due date will be considered for this subject. Year 9 Football and Leadership Development application forms can found in the student links section on SIMON. Students can also request a copy of the application form from their 2025 Health and PE Teacher.
Students in Year 9 may complete up to a maximum of two Health and Physical Education electives across the year. For practicality and safety reasons, the number of classes for each subject, as well as the size of classes, will be capped. Depending on enrolment demands across all Year 9 elective subjects, students may be placed in one or two Health and Physical Education electives. Students wishing to undertake two Health and Physical Education electives should enter these in preferential order. The College will always endeavour to place students in their chosen electives, however due to our large cohort of students, we cannot guarantee this will always occur.
