Year 7
Year 7, Semester 1
In Year 7 Physical Education, the focus is on hitting/striking games, athletics (track and field), sportsmanship, communication and teamwork.
In Semester 1 students are introduced to learning through movement and team based sporting environments. Different classes focus on the sports of Soccer, Cricket, T-ball and Softball to improve their ability to learn new movement skills and tactical awareness. Students also complete an Athletics Unit involving high jump, long jump, triple jump, shot put, discus, javelin and various running events. Students also get the chance to work in teams to design and teach their own game.
In Year 7 Health, students look at Healthy Lifestyles focusing on the healthy eating guidelines and nutrition concepts. The importance of physical activity along with adequate sleep and dealing with stress is also discussed. The effects of Smoking and Alcohol is also covered along with discussions and activities exploring harm minimisation strategies. Near the end of the semester students explore the concepts of Gender and Identity.
Year 7, Semester 2
In Physical Education during Semester 2, students are introduced to learning through movement and sporting environments. Students focus on the sports of Basketball, Swimming, Fitness and Dance. Students also complete a CPR program in Term 4.
In Health, the students complete a theory component on fitness where they focus on the importance of fitness and the various fitness components and training methods. Students create their own Fitness Circuit to demonstrate their acquired knowledge. In line with our practical swimming unit we also cover the theoretical aspects of water safety, CPR and the importance of sun safety.
Year 8
Year 8 Semester 1
In Physical Education during Term 1, students complete a number of striking games including Badminton, Speedminton and Golf. Students apply an understanding of movement and skill acquisition to transfer their knowledge between each sport and build tactical awareness skills such as court position and different stroke technique.
Students also complete a unit on Disabled Sports, including Wheelchair Basketball, Goal Ball and Blind Cricket. In this unit they will learn valuable knowledge in regards to sport and fitness being integral for all people, including those with a physical disability. Students also get a chance to participate in the International Dance program where they learn dances such as the Progressive Jive, the Merengue and the Cha-Cha.
In Year 8 Health, students look at Illicit Drugs and the effects that these drugs can have on the body. Risk reduction and peer pressures around drugs are explored through scenario-based activities. The Cardiovascular and Respiratory Systems of the human body are also explored. Students learn the structure and function of each system and investigate how these two systems respond to exercise through a practical activity.
Year 8 Semester 2
In Physical Education during Term 3, students complete an AFL 9's SEPEP unit where they are assigned a designated role within a football team. Students have various roles within each league such as umpire, coach, statistician and video producer. Key skills learnt throughout the SEPEP program are leadership, communication and organisation.
During Term 4, all students take part in a four week swimming program with a key focus on survival and rescue techniques in aquatic environments. Alongside these units, students will also participate in units on Volleyball & Soft Lacrosse to continue working on skill development and team tactical awareness.
In Health, students complete a unit on First Aid. Students will learn how to provide basic first aid, how to perform CPR and explore the principles of DRSABCD, and will develop important skills, confidence, and knowledge of knowing what to do in an emergency.
