About this subject
Year 7
Year 7 Music looks to introduce music reading, writing and listening skills across the semester. We work through beginning theoretical concepts of rhythm and pitch, but also start to train your ear to find and identify these concepts in different styles of music. Each student at Year 7 has lessons on a Wind, Brass or Percussion instrument (Flute, Clarinet, Saxophone, Trumpet, Trombone, Euphonium, Percussion). You learn about the different instruments offered by the College and pick one to focus on for the 2 terms that you study music. You’ll have an instrumental lesson each week in a small group and then take these skills into the whole class, where we rehearse and perform as a class band.
Year 8
Year 8 Music is a great trip through the interesting facts from Music of other times and cultures, particularly our own indigenous music. This is to help us understand why the Music we listen to today sounds the way it does and the role it has played throughout history. Students perform on instruments with the other members of the class to create an ensemble, as well as performing solos on your own nominated instrument/voice. Musicianship is the language of music theory combined with ear training and students learn to convert the sounds you hear like a sophisticated code system. There are a lot of great digital music programs out there to help you create your own music compositions and we use Mixcraft to hear your original ideas come to life.
**Choosing Music as a subject in Year 8 takes the place of one Art/Tech subject in your timetable that you have not yet studied (excluding Drama which is compulsory in Year 8).
