Year 9 Active for Life

About this subject

Year 9 Active for Life is a semester based subject, providing students with opportunities to develop an appreciation for movement through a diverse range of non-traditional sports and recreation-based activities.

Students will develop an understanding of the physical, social, emotional and spiritual benefits of physical activity, as well as the skills and knowledge to be physically active beyond school. Students will engage in lifelong physical activities that provide alternatives to traditional organised sports, whilst still allowing them to meet Australia’s 24-hour movement guidelines.

Specific practical experiences may include: independent and self-paced activities such as Pilates, archery, inline skating, fishing, fitness training (gym) and golf, as well as non-mainstream activities such as croquet, lawn bowls, table tennis, ten-pin bowling and yard games.

Students will investigate what it means to be physically active, along with the psychological and physiological benefits associated with physical activity, sport and exercise. Students will learn about the risks associated with sedentary lifestyles and develop strategies to incorporate more physical activity into their own and others’ lives, including students at CMCB and family.

Students will be provided with opportunities to reflect on their own experiences in physical activity and the social-emotional responses involvement brings. Students will discover the reasons why various population groups participate in recreation and how this may change throughout the lifespan.

Please note -

Students in Year 9 may complete up to a maximum of two Health and Physical Education electives across the year. For practicality and safety reasons, the number of classes for each subject, as well as the size of classes, will be capped. Depending on enrolment demands across all Year 9 elective subjects, students may be placed in one or two Health and Physical Education electives. Students wishing to undertake two Health and Physical Education electives should enter these in preferential order. The College will always endeavour to place students in their chosen electives, however due to our large cohort of students, we cannot guarantee this will always occur.
