Product Design & Technology – Wood continues to explore the technology processes learnt in previous years of technology education. Students will follow the design process, looking at investigating and identify a need, design and development, production planning and production, and the evaluation of final outcomes. Various Australian hardwoods are introduced into the production of models and complex joinery techniques are explored.
Unit 1
In this unit, students continue to develop their understanding of the importance of Occupational Health and Safety in the workshop. Students look at how to identify the needs of an end-user/s in relation to product design and then being able generate a series of ideas through the design and development process.
Focus areas -
Creative and Critical thinking
A variety of hand-drawing techniques to communicate design ideas
Creating a list of materials, component dimensions and costing of timber
Reading and interpreting plans
Using hand and power tools in a safe work environment
Knowledge of specific tools and equipment used for production
Materials – Australian native timbers
Unit 2
In this unit, students explore the importance of sustainability in product design, looking at the environmental, social and economic impacts. Students will research the sourcing, manufacturing and environmental impacts of a variety of materials.
Focus areas:
The design process
Creative and Critical Thinking
Creativity and Innovation
Cradle to Cradle design
Hand & computer aided drawing techniques
Use of recycled materials
Production Planning – Creating a list of materials, component dimensions and costing of various materials, production plan, quality measures and risk assessments
Use of hand and power tools on a safe work environment
Knowledge of specific tools and equipment used for wood, metal and plastics
Unit 1
Technical skill task to introduce a series of processes and complex joinery techniques.
Small occasional table.
Research and develop an understanding of Australian Forestry and various timber species, looking at their properties, characteristics & uses.
Unit 2
Technical skill task to introduce manufactured materials, a series of processes and complex joinery techniques.
Serving Platter using recycled materials.
Students will follow the design process, conduct research and plan to produce a Lamp made from recycled materials
Students will complete a research assignment looking at the sourcing, manufacturing and environmental impacts of their chosen materials.
This subject provides students with a basis for further study in VCE Product Design and Technology, foundations for those students looking to gain an apprenticeship in the trade areas and general life skills.
