Year 10 Advanced English offers students an opportunity to not only extend their skills in English in preparation for VCE, but also provides an opportunity to explore Literature and English Language ahead of making their VCE English selections for the following year.
The study of English Language enables students to understand the structures, features and discourses of written and spoken texts through the systematic and objective deconstruction of language in use. This subject enables students to further develop and refine their own skills in reading, writing, listening to and speaking English. Students are expected to study a range of texts, including publications and public commentary about language in print and multimodal form. Students also observe and discuss contemporary language in use, as well as consider a range of historical and contemporary written and spoken texts.
The study of Literature focuses on literary texts (such as novels, plays and poetry) and aims to develop students as independent, innovative and creative learners and thinkers who appreciate the aesthetic use of language, evaluate perspectives and evidence, and challenge ideas and interpretations. Students enjoy and respond creatively and critically to literary texts drawn from the past and present and from Australian and other cultures. Students reflect on qualities of literary texts, appreciate the power of language and inquire into the relationships between personal preference and texts, authors, audiences and contexts as they explore ideas, concepts, attitudes and values.
This subject can be chosen as a semester-long elective.
