Biotechnology is a subject that introduces students to the world of genetics. It examines the role of chromosomes and why we have the characteristics that we do. Students are constantly exposed in the media to the advances that are occurring in the world of science and genetics. Biotechnology gives them the skills and background to be able to interpret the language and introduces them to a whole new area – one that is constantly evolving. It is possible to instill in students an interest in the world of genetics and take them on a journey of discovery that will last a lifetime.
In Biotechnology students study cells, DNA structure and replication, protein synthesis, inheritance patterns and genetic engineering. The passing on of genetic information is explored through the use of punnet squares and pedigrees (family trees) – ways of tracing traits and predicting their likelihood of appearing in future generations. Students will look at ways that scientists identify DNA and analyse it, exploring how DNA can be manipulated for genetic research.
Students are introduced to a variety of ways to learn the material in preparation for their further studies. Class learning activities include:
worksheets
videos
interactive online tasks
quizzes
practical work
media analysis
building biological models
using technology to present information e.g animated PowerPoints.
This subject provides students with a basis for further study in VCE Biology.
