VCE Vocational Major Literacy focuses on the development of the knowledge and skills required to be literate in Australia today. The key knowledge and key skills encompass a student's ability to interpret and create texts that have purpose, and are accurate and effective, with confidence and fluency.
Literacy empowers students to read, write, speak and listen in different contexts. Literacy enables students to understand the different ways in which knowledge and opinion are represented and developed in texts drawn from daily life.
Literacy explores four key areas:
Literacy for personal use
Understanding issues and voices
Accessing and understanding informational, organisational and procedural texts
Understanding and engaging with literacy for advocacy
Applied learning in VCE VM incorporates the teaching of skills and knowledge in the context of ‘real life’ experiences. Learners apply what they have learnt by doing, experiencing or relating it to the real world. Students interests and experiences are considered in the design of learning activities.
Students can expect to reflect on aspects of their personal life, research and develop knowledge and skills in new areas, express and share opinions on current issues, present information in effective ways and create and use practical workplace texts. Development of speaking and listening skills will be an integral part of these learning activities. Students read, discuss and view a range of texts and develop individual writing folios. They develop the skills to spell, punctuate and use grammar with reasonable accuracy.
Students may read and create:
biographies
works of fiction
reports, letters
workplace communication
instructional texts
opinion pieces
blogs
publicity material
journals
autobiographical accounts
Students will investigate current social issues that particularly affect young people, including:
social disadvantage
substance abuse
becoming a road user
effective and life enhancing use of technology
identity
healthy forms of self-expression
Successful completion of the VCE VM provides a pathway to apprenticeships, employment and further learning. Students pursue employment pathways in a range of industries and vocational settings.
