Semester 1
In Year 9 English this semester, students work through a creative unit titled ‘Many Modes of Emotion’ that aims to expand their expressive vocabulary. This creative writing unit is designed to increase awareness of emotions within writing, how they can be expressed with maximum impact and how different authors express emotions in their writing. Students will analyse, draft, edit and create a variety of written pieces that focus on the language used to express emotions and create a ‘tone’ for a piece of writing. In Term 2, students explore film as text through the film '10 Things I Hate About You'. Students study genre and the importance of cultural context, whilst learning how various elements of film contribute to story-telling. Students demonstrate their understanding through the completion of a scene analysis and text response essay.
Semester 2
Semester Two commences with the study the 20th Century classic, Of Mice and Men. Students will analyse how people and culture change in different historical, social and cultural contexts. Students will also identify and explain how different literary devices, such as symbolism and foreshadowing, are used to convey meaning within a text. Students will demonstrate their understanding through the completion of a text response essay.
In Term 4, students study the art of persuasion through speaking and listening. They study a variety of persuasive techniques as well as learning the importance of pause, pace, pitch and tone. Students choose a topic they are passionate about and present both a written piece and an audio/visual presentation of their speech.
