Are you interested in the Youth Aeronatical Education Foundation (YAEF). The YAEF consists of both a flying program (students learn to fly and ultimately earn a private pilots license) and a Build A Plane (BAP) program.
The BAP program is directed at middle (8th) and high schoolers. Currently there is one CCPS high schooler in the program. The flying program is focused on high schoolers who have an interest in learning how to fly single engine planes.
The other students in the program (both flying and BAP) hail from Hanover, West Point, New Kent, Williamsburg, Appomatox Regional Governor's School, Henrico, other school districts and home schooling. Some of the districts are at the early stages of recognizing the program for credit.
The BAP program teaches many hands on technical skills as well as team work, communication, critical thinking and planning skills. To give you an example, the students in the BAP begin by learning how to drill, unskin, debur, dimple, reskin and rivet air frames as well as how to read basic blue prints for a plane. This skill set is equivalent to some of the vocational and trade related courses and skill sets that are taught in some programs. Each step is meticulously taught and guided by certified aviation engineers, technicians and pilots so that the final assembled plane can pass all FAA requirements.
Interested student and parent meeting scheduled on May 8 at 6:00 PM to be held in the auditorium at CTC@Hull.
You put the US in Robious!
