It's Teacher Appreciation Week! I have a true and deep respect for the work that teachers do every day for your children. There's really no easy way to express how awesome they are or how far their influence reaches. Be sure to thank them for their determination, creativity, energy, and generosity.

There has been a lot of buzz around school about the new Netflix show 13 Reasons Why. We encourage you to ask your children if they have seen the show, at home or with a friend. If the answer is yes, please talk to your child about it. Suicide, bullying, and sexual violence are complex and emotional issues. If you would like some talking points, this link from SAVE: Suicide Awareness Voices of Education could be a good place to start: https://www.save.org/13-reasons-why/ Should your conversation lead to concerns about any of these topics, your child's school counselor has resources to help. Don't hesitate to reach out.

Having trouble deciding if this show is appropriate for your child to watch? This link to Common Sense Media gives some guidance to parents who have not seen the show. https://www.commonsensemedia.org/tv-reviews/13-reasons-why"

As the weather warms and schedules grow more hectic with extra curricular events, it's important to keep one nightly routine in tact: reading! Just 20 minutes of reading a night can ensure that our students continue to grow and excel as learners. As this Infographic shows, students who read 20 minutes a night score in the 90th percentile on standardized tests and encounter nearly 2 million words per school year! Remember that our librarians and English teachers are always ready to help your student find that just right book to make nightly reading an easy routine!
