Ava Duvernay, a famous filmmaker once wrote, “When we're talking about diversity, it’s not a box to check. It is a reality that should be deeply felt, held, and valued by all of us.” When it comes to cultural acceptance, schools, communities, and people should all come together and make an effort to help show inclusivity. Cultural acceptance is the power to welcome all, and make sure everyone feels that they belong. From schools holding fairs to represent their diversity, or communities participating in parades, to showcase their culture, cultural acceptance is a huge part of our daily life. In our society today, American schools and communities have shown cultural acceptance in several ways.
In 2020, Dempsey Middle School gave their efforts to demonstrate cultural acceptance by holding a diversity fair. In the article, “Diversity Fair Held at Dempsey Middle School,” written by Glenn Battishill, sixth grader Ava Yost states, “It’s a thirty-day challenge and you start on day one, and each day it gives you a random act of kindness to do to spread kindness and positivity at our school.” This demonstrates how even the youngest students at the school are taking their part by making sure everyone is kind and all students feel included. In the same text, English teacher Brittany King notes, “My students are from seven different countries, so everyone speaks different languages in our room. They all have different backgrounds. So we’ve got Mexican candy, Puerto Rican candy, and an Egyptian desert.” This also proves how the classes at Dempsey Middle School are showing cultural acceptance by enabling students to share candy from their cultures. Not only have American schools shown cultural acceptance, but communities have as well.
In Hockessin Delaware, the community came together to participate in a diversity and culture parade to show incredible cultural acceptance. In the text, “Delaware Group to Take Part in Virtual Iraugation Parade,” Mike Phillips writes, “The Chinese American Community Center (CACC) in Hockessin will be participating in the 'Parade Across America' as part of the Presidential Inauguration on Wednesday, January 20, 2021.” This is a great example of cultural acceptance because Delaware is putting in efforts to showcase their diversity in a parade. Also in the text, Rebbeca Luis, the coordinator the the performances mentions, “All of the performers repeatedly practiced and filmed in the cold weather on one Saturday at the community center’s parking lot with the one goal in mind - to showcase our culture and diversity. We are so honored that we were selected for the historic event.” This also shows that motivation drives performers to show their culture and diversity. Isn’t that so inspiring? In conclusion, communities have tried to showcase and demonstrate their diversity and cultural acceptance.
After all, cultural acceptance is a serious topic that everyone should take time to pay attention to. Whether it was schools throwing diversity fairs or communities participating in culture parades, both schools and communities have shown an extreme amount of effort towards welcoming others and culturally accepting them. Not only is cultural acceptance about diversity but as the young sixth-grader Ava Yost showed, it’s about kindness too. Also, the community in Hockessin demonstrated cultural acceptance by showcasing dances and traditions. Always remember that cultural acceptance is the power to be inclusive. You could make a difference by being culturally accepting.
