Martin Luther King Jr Speech A Collection of Powerful Quotes With Powerful Meanings
By Noah Solovey
Martin Luther King Jr was a powerful man, who changed the way we all live today. Throughout his life, he gave speeches that helped spark a difference. Today, I will speak about meaningful quotes from his life and go in-depth on their deep meanings. These quotes have so much to tell, so let's begin.
"Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that." This quote is like a book, with so many pages to explore. This quote was delivered in a sermon entitled, "Loving Your Enemies" at a Baptist Church in Montgomery, Alabama. This quote is a metaphor for kindness and love, stating that all the hate that puts an obstacle in one's way; can be outdone by the power of love.
This quote has changed the way we all live today in many specific ways. In some classrooms, this quote is embedded on the wall, to remind all students how Dr King made a difference, and wasn't afraid to stand up for himself and others. This quote also speaks to people by saying, "In a setting filled with negativity, all it takes is one to bring positivity to the situation."
I relate to this quote in various ways. Whenever others are bullying my peers, I remember this quote of King's. I remember that hate is not as powerful as kindness. On that note, I will stand up for them. The more kindness that comes to a situation means a greater amount of force pulling towards the hate, to drive it out.
This quote has a broad lesson, that all should take in. Know that love is greater than hate, and make sure to drive the hate out. Make sure to represent King, by showing how you could make a difference. "Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that."
"Faith is taking the first step even when you don't see the entire staircase." Faith is exactly what Martin Luther King had, and his way of leadership. He was the one to take the first step on the staircase, and he didn't see every step that was yet to come. He knew that each step would bring a new story, but he wanted to stand up for his rights, and that is what he did. The first step MLK took on the staircase was leading the Montgomery Bus Boycott. This boycott was a way of standing up for himself in front of his enemies. This boycott ended up being a huge success, ending with bus segregation in Montgomery. MLK saw that his faith made a difference, and on that note, took another step. As he took more steps, King had made such a difference that the number of people that were against him grew. These horrible people bombed MLK's house while MLK was at a mass meeting. King hated this, as he fought without violence, and those who fought against him fought with violence. Therefore, he wouldn't stop standing up for his freedom. Therefore, he took another step. On these next steps in his staircase of life, many events occurred. He was put into jail 30 times, he led marches, boycotts, and gave speeches. The most meaningful speech he gave was titled, "I Have A Dream." In this speech, he spoke about how he dreamt that one day, people will treat each other equally, and with kindness. He continued to take as many steps as humanly possible, until, a tragic event occured. On April 4th, while standing on a balcony, King was shot. This was a devestating event. As one would wonder, the staircase of faith he took ended. His dream continued to live on, though he wasn't alive. Others decided to stand up for their rights, and continue in his shadow, on the staircase of faith.
There are many other powerful quotes by MLK. He gave these quotes in meetings, at speeches, on television, and other such places. He stood up for his rights, by being a leader, and some of these inspiring quotes describe it all. First of all, his powerful quote, "If you can't fly, then run. If you can't run, then walk. If you can't walk, then crawl, but by all means, you must keep moving." King used this quote to simply state, "Never Give Up." He uses the words, "but by all means, you must keep moving" to show how no matter the obstacles that come in your way, you must not let them put you down. "We may have all come in different ships, but we're all in the same ship now." This quote describes how even though we have differences, we must all stick together through hard times. King represented this quote by leading marches and boycotts with people like him. All these powerful quotes highly affect how we live our lives today. If it wasn't for Martin Luther King Jr, everything would be different. Segregation would still exist in many places. These quotes and speeches and marches and boycotts all made a difference. And you could, too. So what would I take away from Martin Luther King Jr? What I took away from Martin Luther King Jr is that it doesn't take much to be a leader and stand up for what's right. To be the light that drives out darkness, or take the first step in the staircase of faith. Martin Luther King Jr was an inspiring man, who embarked on a journey of change that changes the way we live today.
