Letter by Eva Piper
I wrote you a letter
That I don’t think you’ll ever receive
I’ll lie and say it got lost in the mail
Or that the waves took it out to sea
I’ll jot my hurt into pretty nullity
And scramble the words into a puzzle
I’ll write the draft anew each time
And create something pleasant to the eye
I’ll hide you within my writings,
Hoping it’ll give me a sense of closure
Wondering why the universe made this happen
Blaming it on a pair of honest lovers
I hope you collapse into the arms of my words
Tying a ribbon of hope around your neck
Pulling tightly into a corset to keep you in check
I hope the words I wrote for you stab like a knife
The blood dripping onto your white canvas
A canvas painted over and over and over
Lies covered up by your disclosure
The envelope seals
And I feel a tug
A heart on my sleeve
Waiting to be unstrung
