Technology has done many bad things in our world. Sure it has helped us understand our world, make groundbreaking discoveries, and most importantly social media. Social media has helped families reunite with each other, share funny videos with friends, and so much more, but still, social media has done a ton of bad too.
Ever since 2007, when social media was available on mobile, suicide rates have gone up by 56% through the ages of 10-24 from the years 2007 to 2017. Just think about thousands and thousands of children and teens each day getting hate comments, dislikes, or not that many views. The whole world turned against some 13-year-old who took a selfie with a bad haircut. That isn’t the only thing social media has done—fake news.
Fake news has caused many things like starting tensions between countries, affecting elections, and causing people to go into panic. Not only that, it just makes people believe things that aren’t even happening. Imagine a grandma reading that the world is ending. Of course, that grandma is going to be terrified.
Another thing that social media has done is pull families apart. Some people get addicted to their screens and spend more time scrolling than being with their families. When people get addicted to social media it is just as bad as getting addicted to drugs and alcohol.
An additional situation that social media has brought up is self-imaging. Self-imaging is when you might take a selfie of yourself. Sure it's okay to do there is nothing wrong with it, but it is only bad when it goes too far. Sometimes, people take hours at a time just trying to find the perfect pose or place for their selfie. This is very time-consuming.
In conclusion, social media has pulled families apart, spread fake news, and started tensions between countries. After reading this you might just think, “Cap I am never EVER going to stop using social media.” Maybe you won’t stop, but please just take some time off of social media and read a book, touch grass, or play a board game. Just take a break and breathe. Okay bye…
