Argumentative Essay by Eva Piper
I really liked this one and enjoyed writing it. Mrs. Hete commented that I did good with monitoring my repetition, so that's a win!
There was a time when people didn’t have electronics; when people would talk and play games with each other instead of watching TikToks. Many studies throughout the years have shown that electronic usage is negatively impacting our lives. It’s ruining our future generations and affecting ours. Technology is inadequate for us and our brains because it is addictive and distracting.
Technology is deficient for us because it’s addicting. According to Source #1, “The stimulation provokes excitement–a dopamine squirt–that researchers say can be addictive. In its absence, people feel bored.” This proves how addictive electronics are and why we have trouble putting them down. In addition, Source #1 states, “In 2008, people consumed three times as much information per day as they did in 1960. And they are constantly shifting their attention. Computer users at work change windows or check e-mail or other programs more than 37 times an hour, new research shows.” This shows how many people rely on technology and how much of our everyday life it takes. Not only are electronics narcotic, but it’s also distractive.
Technology is flawed because it is diverting from the real world. Source #1 also wrote, “They say our ability to focus is undermined by bursts of information.” This proves how our attention can easily be shifted at the sight of a screen which is not natural. Furthermore, Source #1 explains, “Lily, [Campbell] a second grader, is allowed only an hour a day of unstructured time, which she often spends on her devices. The laptop can consume her. ‘When she’s on it, you can holler her name all day and she won’t hear, ‘ Mrs. Campbell says.” This shows an example of how electronics can affect our relationships with other people and our attention span. In sum, devices are dangerous because they are habit habit-forming and detracting.
Some people claim, “Technology use can benefit the brain in some ways, researchers say. [...] And players of some video games develop better visual acuity.” However, video games can also cause stress and anger, for example, if you lose. There are healthier, more productive ways of gaining better vision, and going outside to play with your friends is a better way to get in shape than sitting around at your desk and PC. Not to mention how staring at a screen can damage your eyes simultaneously, making this claim useless.
The addiction and distraction of technological gadgets cause them to have negative outcomes. First, it’s the type of hobby that keeps you coming back for more and more. Body 1 showed how much we feel that we need our electronics. Next, it can displace your concentration with the tap of a button. Body 2 explained how it can change our relationships with friends and families; maybe even ruin them. Reducing the use of electronics could help people become better versions of themselves.
