Both of my parents were born and raised in El Paso, and since my mom was the oldest she had to mature at a young age and help her mom watch over her siblings. My mothers parents were separated so she struggled to find time to see them, they both lived very far from each other and she always had to find her own transportation. She's taught me to be strong and independent. She showed me that giving up was never the answer because anyone can do it if they really put their mind to it. The character Xiomara reminds me of my mom as a young girl who struggled and felt as though she had to be tough everytime. “ The Poet X by Elizabeth Acevedo is about a teenage girl named Xiomara who is from the Dominican Republic. She explains her thoughts and emotions as she goes through life. It’s about her relationship with her mami and understanding her religion. Xiomara feels as though she is a burden to her family compared to her “perfect” twin brother whom she always has to stand up for and her mom who is a very religious and strict person who thought her daughter was going against Jesus by not following the rules of the church. A line that really stuck out to me was “I wish my body could fold into the tiniest corner for me to hide in.” I like this because it really made me understand the author's feelings and relatable teenage thoughts. I felt really connected the whole time reading this book, taking everything she would say personally because of how relatable it was. It also helped me view a lot of things in different perspectives and made me understand how most people feel the same way. She struggles to form a connection between her parents which a lot of people struggle with but it makes you feel as though you aren’t alone.
