As a senior in highschool theater, I am very excited for my last UIL One-Act Play performance. I have been in the theater department since freshman year after taking Mr. McEwen´s technical theater class, and so far had done behind the scene technical work as a light operator, makeup, and scenic design after school. I am currently in the Once on This Island Jr. musical production by Lynn Ahrens as a part of the Ensemble, it will be my first time on stage acting.
The play chosen is based on the Victorian era, the rise of mathematicians and technology. Ada and the Engine by Lauren Gunderson is a tragedy focusing on Ada Bryon Lovelace and her love for math and computers. Young Ada meets Charles Babbage and immediately connects, working together to design the first computer. I love a dramatic ending, and this love triangle, heartbreaking play was surprisingly unexpected. You get so deep in the story, and then the realization hits when Ada falls sick. Since the play is based on real people, the ending finishes off with poetry made by said people, it is a song that has melodies overlapping, the concept of time is place and you're levitating with Ada to the afterlife. When Mr. Rivera handed me the script, knowing he was set on this play particularly, I knew it was going to be a beautiful piece to read. I cannot wait to see this play become a reality.
