Description:
Evergreen trees, 10-20 m high, bark black or dark brown; branchlets decussate, stout. Leaves simple, opposite, elliptic-oblong or ovate-oblong, apex acute or shortly acuminate, margin entire, thickly coriaceous, glossy. Flowers polygamodioecious. Male flowers: 3-9 in terminal fascicles; sepals 4; petals 4, larger than sepals, fleshy, yellow-red inside, green red outside; stamens numerous. Bisexual flowers: 1-2 at the apices of branchlets, purple;. Fruit a berry; 5-7 cm across, glossy purplish-black, smooth; pericarp thick, spongy, reddish, with yellow latex; seeds up to 8, aril very pleasant, juicy, thick, white.
