A regular check-in, touch base meeting between supervisor and employee, that should be occurring on a frequent and consistent basis. 1:1 meetings are more anticipatory, in-depth meaningful discussions between employee/supervisor that allow for progress/performance checkpoints and foster empathetic work relationships.
Feedback, both to and from the employee, should be happening consistently in 1:1s
Feedback is an evaluative response or reaction to a situation, action, behavior, interaction, etc. To give feedback to an employee is to share information in response to something they did or said, in order to a. Praise, recognize, and reinforce the behavior, or, b. Provide constructive criticism that elicits greater self-awareness and performance improvement.
Whereas feedback is based on evaluative performance, Coaching is a non-judgmental exploratory problem-solving space.
Supervisors in coach mode help support & guide their employee in exploring challenges, clarifying their goals, creating action plans, and hold them accountable to the plan. Employees are the lead in this journey, it is your role as coach not to tell them how to solve the problem, but to ask open-ended, empowering questions that help them to uncover the root of the problem and challenge them to develop their own personal plan of action that aligns with their natural way of operating.
