Dear Family and Friends, Christmas, 1985
We have been consistently poor in writing and hope this brief news capsule will bring us closer together. Each year we find much for which to be thankful. 1985 has been wonderful. We are especially grateful our family is together, our parents are enjoying life, and for our friends.
Suzette, soon to be 9, is enjoying the 3rd grade, her new neighbor Maggie Jones, a bicycle, stuffed animals, and a newly painted bedroom.
David, 12, enjoys the Apple IIe, his GO-cart, a skateboard, and a bicycle. He enjoys being the neighborhood GO-cart mechanic!
Mel, almost 15, is "into surfing, skating, new wave and music. This fall she survived a car wreck and boarding school" and is now in state level competition in swimming.
Susan manages the household, is involved with the children's schools and neighborhood activities. She works part-time at Emory Convalescent Home.
Roger is enthusiastically pursuing reproductive health and population interests from a new post as Professor and Coordinator, International Health Track, Emory MPH Program.
We travelled more than usual this year. For spring break wo-went camping with Macaulays in Key West. In May, Roger and Susan visited George and Eileen Groth in San Diego and Joshua National Monument with Dad and Mom Rochat. In August we visited Kaunitzes in St. Augustine while Mel and David went surfing. In October, all but Mel visited Barth and Betty Van der Els in Shaftsbury VT. For Christmas, we'll be with Susan's family in Peoria. Roger was also on business in Madras, India; Dhaka, Bangladesh; and Berlin and Geneva. Sorry we missed the Pacific Northwest this year!
We had several special international houseguests: Dr. Japheth Mati from Nairobi joined us for 2 months in the spring. Tarek and Greta Nawas spent the summer with us. This winter we hope Barbara Kwast, a nurse midwife from Africa will join us for awhile.
Dad and Mom Naug spent 6 months in Australia last year, so we rented the lower level of the "lake house" to Barry Ragsdale, a helpful and enterprising young bachelor. We are pleased to have the folks back. Despite arthritis and the approach of his 78th birthday, Dad joins Mom in picking crabapples and guinces to make jellies. They always welcome our visits with curried foods, and willingly share their home and lakefront with our friends and visitors. We were especially pleased to have the Mittelstadts from Portland and Mom and Dad Rochat from Walla Walla. Dad R. , age 80, turned out to be in the lake swimming more than anyone else.
We were saddened this year by the drowning of a cousin, Dr.Larry Groth, who was spear fishing off the coast of Mexico. Our special sympathies for Theresa and Carlos.
We also have special memories of Albert Rochat-Reymond, who died at age 95. We met him 5 years ago in the Valle du Joux where he was riding his moped to and from church.
