View from an Airplane Window
July 27, 2004
The clouds are thick, white, and billowing under the wings of the airplane
Some are towering up high, almost reaching to the window
Shapes like mountains, smokestacks, castles in the sand
Fleecy, soft and inviting like a sheepskin blanket
Now they break asunder and you see the earth below
Squares and circles, green patches of cultivated land
Others dark and arid where no human hand has worked the soil
Tiny houses, roads that criss-cross the landscape,
Rivers flow gently through the plains and meadows
Lakes like little jewels of jade and topaz
Invite the weary passerby to stop and rest awhile.
Majestic mountain peaks, some fierce and bleak
Others covered with trees, and beautiful beyond belief
Who made this beauty? What miraculous power
Created this great land and all that lies within?
Yes, man tilled the soil, dammed the rivers and cultivated the fields
He built his houses in which to live
And airplanes that soar like eagles above the clouds
But God created man; and all the beauty of His creation
The mountains, lakes, rivers and seas
He made for us to enjoy and give Him praise
Thank you God for this beautiful world,
And forgive us for doing so much damage
To the earth you so generously gave us
To share with all the rest of your creation.
