the other day while talking with Connie and Vicky I used a term from my kid days about something I had lost that had “gone galley west" was new to them then we got to talking about expressions from those early days so here come a few. My Mom had grown up in a very strict Quaker home. and many of the qualities of our home were from those early days of her own home. language was important to Mom. and words that even bordered on swearing were absolutely forbidden. I can remember sometimes someone from outside would use one and Mom would stop the talk right then letting that person know that such words were NOT used in her home and if that person wanted to use them he/she could go outside now. and if the person did a second time Mom made it sure and outside he/she went now. and IF we kids used one of her forbidden words well she had a stick behind the kitchen stove which we kids called her “Persuader stick" and she would persuade us to forget that word (usually once at the receiving end of that stick was enough) as we grew up we realized that while Dad was king of the 120 acres they owned Mom was queen in the house and garden plot and while Dad might grumble softly to himself he never so

far as I ever knew challenged Mom in those two realms. (making the garden would be its own story) but since Mom was so set about words dad and us kids never used swear words outside the home (I thank God today that I never had to UNlearn those words) but Mom, and Dad had some expressions that are rather unheard today so for a while I want to share those because some of them were really expressive and HOW they could emphasize them. growing up in that Quaker Home mom had a lot of respect for words that pertain to the Lord and words that even sounded like them were not allowed: gee was not to be used it sounded like the first part of the Name of Jesus nor gee whiz. gosh and golly were taken from the Word for God, so OUT. some where the word Holy Cats came up and that word Holy was from the Bible so NO. darn was too much like the real swear word SO NO. now from this it might look like I thought Mom was sort well a prude or something which is FAR from the truth. Mom was usually happy and full of laughter and enjoyed fun times her laugh was not the loud Haw Haw of Dad's but sort of as we kids said she snickered but it came from deep within and she sort of snickered all over, well "for land's sake" I just looked at the clock and then at this already long discourse so tune in tomorrow night and "I'll be jiggered" if I don't share some real expressions form those early days. love to you all and a prayer for a GOOD night and day tomorrow for each of you. from a kid grown old but having fun in
