To Aunt Dolly on her 90th Birthday
March 27, 2003
By Susan Rochat
Aunt Dolly, Aunt Dolly, you’ve reached 90 by golly
What a feat, what an epic milestone!
We’re cheering and clapping, so you’d best not be napping
While your daughter is reading this poem.
March 27, 1913 was no ordinary day
In a land far away and exotic,
There was born a girl child, who drove everyone wild
So lovely was she, ‘twas chaotic!
With 10 siblings she played, and now and then prayed
For a handsome Prince Charming to woo her,
Her prayer it was heard, for along came Sir Wilford
To court and to charm and to wed her.
Time swiftly went by, there were laughs, hugs and cries
As they raised their young family of three,
Wig had stories galore and Dolly a few chores,
But most work was done by the cook, mali and dhobi!
Soon the time came to immigrate to the land of their fate,
The British Isles welcomed them in;
Life now became hard, she was no longer “memsahib”
But bottlewasher, cook and boorchi.
Her children were married, and the bloodlines were carried
To grandchildren that numberd a few.
But America was calling and they couldn’t help falling
In love with the red, white and blue
Had it not been for Aunt Dolly, Uncle Wig, and Aunt Ollie
Susan Naug would have not met her beau
For Sue’s mother Ollie, who was stubborn by golly
Insisted Seattle was the right place to go.
There Susan met Roger , who’s always been a lodger
Uncle Wig & Dolly were the first
Of the family tree who met Rog personally
With her curry she filled him till he burst!
Family ties in UK were too strong to delay
A welcome home to the land they’d adopted
so they settled once more, surrounded by a score
Of loved ones whos joy was protracted.
Dolly knit furiously for her large family
They stopped by, by the dozen and droves.
And her fabulous cooking was so very good looking
It was gobbled up before it even left the stove!
Aunty Dolly:
With loved ones surrounded and in your faith grounded
We wish for you memories to treasure
May your birthday by bright; You have fought the good fight
May your cup be filled full beyond measure.
On her birthday we pray for God’s blessings to stay
With Aunt Dolly, wife, mother, and grandmother
She’s lived life to the full, and it’s never been dull
So God bless her and keep her forever.
