Dear Folks,
Just rec'd Dad's letter today; I don't know when I last wrote you but it must've been before this last weekend I'm sure!
Last Wed. nite Mr. & Mrs. Davis came visiting from Tanglewood, Mass. & Bob & I went with them to a fine eating place where they treated us to a superb dinner of roast duckling. Real good!
Thurs. evening Helmut Schmidt, Judy B., Kathy O'Brien & I went swimming in Conesus Lake, a lovely lake abt 30 miles S of here. I had never met K.O. before, but she was a fairly sharp looking blonde, just graduated from Wheaton College. She casually mentioned she was going to Ohio on Saturday to a wedding. I asked her where in Ohio. She said Mansfield & kiddingly asked if I wanted to come along. So I asked her when she was leaving. I think she was slightly shook over my accepting her invite so freely-girls should know better than to make casual invites to strange fellows! At any rate, we left Rochester right after my Diff. Eq. final Friday, arrived Mansfield 9 hrs later where she let me off @edge of town. Before her car was turned around, I had a ride to Mt. Vernon (only 40 miles away).
Dave Dillon & I spent all day Saturday working on building a stone wall around his place. Much slower work than I expected. He figured 4 ½ tons stones was a good day’s work. That evening, I saw the most beautiful display of fireflies ever. I think that, to me, Dave’s farm is the most beautiful place I have seen in the East. It enchants me every time I go there. Both Dave & his father work for Continental Can Company: Dave works in a research lab, his father is in charge of Quality Control.
At any rate, K.O. & I drove all Sat nite coming back to Rochester & I went to meeting here with Mae [the rest of her family is at their Camp Li Lo Li (Life Love Light) near Alleheny State Park] I hope to go down & visit Camp Li Lo Li with Helmut & others next weekend.
Thanks to whoever sent the cookies; I used them for emergency rations Sun. morning as the kitchen was locked. They were quite dry & crumbled by the time they got here, tho.
I’m still wondering what to pack for Germany. The boat leaves Pier 97 12 noon Sep 15 & arrives in Le Havre Sept 25. The route to Munich will be
25-27 Sept Paris France
28 Sept departure for Brussels, Belgium
29 Sep departure for Cologne, Germany
30 Sept trip up Rhine over Mainz, Karlsruhe to Freiburg
2 Oct dinner in Freiburg
3 Oct departure for Munich via Black Forest.
Well, I’d best go get to work (for a change).
Hope DER & MBR have safe and happy trip to Clark’s Fork. I’d like to come out & see where MBR’ll be working. If it were 1000 instead of 3000 miles you can be sure I’d be there. (One can go a 1000 miles in a weekend easy; 3000 takes nearly a week)
Love to all,
Rog
