1963 DEW to Vicki Rohrmann
Well Vicki,
Things have happened.
Roger arrived Wednesday morning at 5AM. His face was bespeckled with stubby black hairs and his white shirt was brown-gray. He left last Saturday from Nanuet, New York, was in Niagara Falls that night to pick up his goods. His car, Taurus, has a broken something-he stuck in a boot, wax or something, stopped up the trouble (?) I guess and made It here. From Niagara the first nite he pulled off the road for 3 hours and thereafter 5 hours a nite. He drove on coffee-nerves. When he couldn’t focus on anything not even moving cars, he’d pull over. Just imagine. He stopped in Detroit and Denver. Otherwise he’s been hotting it out with a broken speedometer.
Yesterday morning I helped unload his Taurus-he had boxes & suitcases packed so tight I couldn’t have put anything in. He had his spring’s dirty clothes all packed, strangled, and squeezed in boxes & suitcases. For the 4 years away from home his clothes have been diminishing & declining-worn spots; his seven white shirts had to be washed, scrubbed & scrubbed-the white had turned yellow, covered with brown. He never spends a cent on clothes. He’s a penny pincher with himself-gives to everybody else.
Our living room, porch my bedroom, the folk’s bedroom, and the washing & ironing room have a few clothes on a chair, brush & shaving kit on an end table, a few books & tracts here & there, etc. It’s fantastic what he’s collected. He’s got a box of books just in German-religion, literature, etc; many in French & Russian, Classics & all.
Oh, skip all this-it’s just an essay. What I really wrote you about. I had a short talk with him this morning from 8-8:30. He asked me what chance for valedictorian. Then, “What about top 10-15?” D- “Maybe top 30-20”
R- “What college have or will you apply to”
D “few in Oregon, U of W & B”
R :What field do yo plan to major in”
D “Maybe medical secretary, nurse”.
R “What you want college for. Go to a secretarial school.
D “Well, “ and on it goes.
He thinks I’m as brainy as he but I’m far below that & furthermore, wouldn’t know what to do if my IQ was higher. Oh, well.
Then we started talking of religion. He claims everyone that doesn’t get to know all cults & social levels of people are narrow minded. True, but not everyone is gifted with personality, brains, money, etc.
Another, oh well.
`His concept of Gen 1 vs evolution has widened, too. He has some points I agree with him. But his mind goes so much farther than mine & his eyes just search me with heat & knowledge & fervour. & all that.
Well, I’m fortunate to have such a brother and I wouldn’t trade for anyone. I just wish I could understand him. He’s a mental giant in my opinion.
Thanks for listening. I’m tuning out, you’ve just heard the latest. Oh, no, you haven’t.
Marilee & Roger are going to live together at the U of W for sure. Dorothy
