seems that 9/11 has sort of drowned out Grand Parents Day so just thought of one little event that will bring it back to mind-- for those of you who call my dad grandpa--or great or great great gramp--and for the rest just something that happens on a farm, well since the move
from western Minnesota to eastern part changed dad from a wheat farmer to potatoes and dairy it was necessary always then to have a bull as part of the cattle herd, well we had this one who was pretty good sized--and seems he hated people or at least kid people - this was a Shorthorn (don't know why they called it shorthorn when he didn't have any horns - so was what we called a "mulley') well one day cousin Ernest had for some reason come into our pasture and the bull chased him up a tree where he sat for a couple hours before getting courage to come down and go home, then this Mulley had also chased Curt and Ben, and Ray and I were scared of him But dad just laughed at us all saying we were "scaredy-cats" well one day he was in the pasture and "mulley" saw him and came at him - dad met him and put his hands on his head trying to push him aside--but mulley wouldn't be pushed and he was pushing dad backward toward the fence which was a barbed wire fence -- Curt and I were watching and scared to move - but hoping for dad. at the fence that bull just lowered his head and then with a quick up thrust lifted dad over the fence and he hit the ground hard, but a madder man never was and dad got up and found a big stick --really a club and leaning over the fence hit the bull right on the top of his head hard. broke the club and stunned the bull - well the next morning dad got in the car and went to town without saying what he was going to do, but in a short time a man came out who was a butcher-- and he butchered that bull right there in the pasture - at supper that night Ben suddenly spoke up and said "looks like we kids aren't the only scaredy-cats" poor dad. For once he had no come back but what a jolly time we had with him that night. and four boys were so glad to get rid of that bull. memories sure are fun. love you you all me
