n.d. (1962? Oct Pope d. 1963) RWR
“On Sept. 10, Pope John XXIII appealed for immediate negotiations between East and West for a peaceful solution of the Berlin crisis, urging the leaders of both sides to “face squarely the tremendous responsibility they bear before the tribunal of history…”
The American people had the right to hope that President Kennedy and other governmental leaders would have greeted the plea with open arms. But all that was heard from Washington was horrifying silence. And it was left to Soviet Premier Khruschev to welcome the Pope’s appeal for East-West negotiations. He declared the head of the world Catholic church talks common sense.
Then the Soviet leader asked a significant question. “Will such adherents of the Catholic faith as John Kennedy and Konrad Adenauer and others head the “sacred warning” of the Pope of Rome”?
Dear Folks,
The above article, written in the obviously communist backed The Worker of Sept. 26, caught my eye along with another strong article. “I Am Invited to Join American Nazis”.
The particular interest in this article tho was in the hint at a possible passive coalition of Catholics and communists-which I personally don’t believe could or would happen for a long time-but tho’t you’d enjoy reading it anyhow.
This world of ours is simultaneously one of the loveliest places that could possibly exist-and one hell of a place to live-all depending on which view point one wishes to take.
In Die Zeit-a German newspaper from Hamburg-one reads the same big print as in Am. Papers Krieg oder Frieden (Peace or War)
Last Sunday evening I visited the Local Brighton Community Church and heard an “inspiring” talk on Communism. The speaker, Sterling Houston, (an old friend of mine) is quitting his

job at Eastman Kodak to work for the “Youth for Christ” movement and beginning with a resume of the dangers of Communism continued with the responsibility of Christian to set forth Christ’s love & the gospel at every opportunity. A very quiet fellow, he himself has been quite gripped by the message and puts it across so sincerely & convincingly that if one didn’t have any background on the subject one would feel the urgency. I asked him to speak to IVCF in 3 wks.
Afterwards I went to a farewell party for Judy Blanchard who is going to the U of Chicago to do grad studies in social welfare. When she recognized me after the YP meeting, she ran over, grabbed my hands & jumped up & down, shouting “Roger! Roger!” (What a wonderful way to get one’s ego raised!!) She sure is a lovely girl, tho. Wished we had some Christians like her on campus this year. I fear that many of the best are gone. In pushing for open mindedness, they have, to a great extent “forgotten their first love”. There is one new fellow (from the O.B) from Kansas City who is a real dear Christian lad, tho. I think he’ll be a real help.
Just got your letter, Dad-thanx. I think I wrote you re: classes, but will write again when all is settled i.e. chem. Dep’t called staff (Staph?) mtg. to see if I could do project under Dr. Adolph at Hospital instead of chem. Project. I’m writing personal petition to Dean of Students.
