Dear Rochats,
Rev. Art Sanford sent me your wonderful picture of Susan as a baby with her parents. I, in turn, forwarded it to Fran and Stan Brush. Thought Susan and Stephen (sorry I've spelt his name incorrectly) would identify with the message I sent the Brushes along with the picture, so here it is. You probably don't remember Peter Nailer, just turned 60, because his family was Anglican. His parents left KGP for Oz when he was four years old. Peter's grandparents, the Magrys, lived nextdoor to my grandparents, the Bunyans, in Japatapur. He "discovered" me (How else?) through Cynthia (Brush) Gray's "Farewell the Winterline" on-line newsletter, in which excerpts of a memoir piece I had written ("Memories of Home") were published.
//Could you guys let me know if any of the Seths or Gaspars are still around? Wiggy Gaspar and his wife, as I recall, won a British football pool and went out to Australia; Clarence (Clarrie) Gaspar, as also the twins, Peter and Paul, live/lived in England; Barbara Seth passed away, I know, but perhaps her younger brothers, the Seth twins, are still with us.
//Do you know about Blair Williams and his US-based non-profit fund to help elderly destitute Anglo-Indians and the children of poor AI families still in India? Blair is the publisher of an on-going series of books whose proceeds go, 100 percent, to swell the fund (Calcutta Tiljalla Relief or CTR, Inc.). The books so far published are: Anglo-Indians by Blair Williams (no time to research the correct title); Haunting India, by Margaret Deefholts, a celebrated AI travel writer living in Vancouver, BC, Canada; and Voices on the Verandah, an anthology of AI prose and poetry. A fourth book, The Way We Were," is slated for publication later this year. If you are interested, contact Blair at: blairrw@worldnet.att.net.
//Sincerely,
Sylvia (Greenwood) Staub

This pix of Ollie and Bob Naug (of the Seth-Gasper-Naug tribe) with their second child, Susan, should recall Sunday school and many other memories for you guys (Fran & Stan). I well remember Susan as a tiny, pixie-like little girl with a mop of beautiful curls, and her brother, Steven, and, of course, their parents. My first job in the CME's office at the BNR Workshop was in Gerry Greene's department, where Susan's mom, Ollie, was a colleague. I had recently left St. Michael's, Darjeeling, and completed a partially self-taught course in typing and shorthand when I applied for--and got--that job. Marj Magry (also a colleague) and Ollie took me under their wing--and a good thing, too, because as a teenager I was very naive and unsure of myself. About that typing-and-shorthand course: Padre Brush very kindly gave me the use of his parsonage office typewriter in after-office hours, and I taught myself how to type from a typing manual gifted me by one of the GI's who were frequent visitors at our home in "Winifred Villa," Japatapur. The typewriter was the equivalent of a Model-T Ford and is one of the reasons I have such strong fingers! The shorthand (Pitman's) I learned from a local Anglo-Indian (Archie Ireland), under the guava trees in my grandmother's garden. Pitman's is a phonetic system, and since my tutor had an atrocious English accent, it was for a time quite confusing. (He used to pronounce, let's say, Pacific Ocean as Pazy-fick Oh-shun and Pythagorus as Pith-a-gorus.)
//I've just heard from Peter Nailer, the second son born to Gwen Magry and Herbert Nailer, recently returned from a third visit to KGP, that our maidan (the "golf links") is no more, replaced by shops and dwellings. What's sadder yet is that our Japatapur homes have been replaced by similar constructions. You are lucky, Fran and Stan, that your childhood home, "the Parsonage," is intact.
Ever,
Sylvia (Greenwood) Staub

Hi Art and Natalie,
We became grandparents for first time on February 3--and were struck by the similarity in pictures between Susan in her first few months (see attached picture) and our grandaughter Rachel Louise Harris (see photos below), born in Birmingham AL.
We thought you might especially enjoy the attached picture of Bob and Ollie (known here as Richard and Estelle) and Susan Naug (1944). We've been following your e mails and glad to know that Natalie is perking up.
Our love to you both, Roger and Susan Rochat in Atlanta
