Subject: Re: Annual Christmas letter response-a P.S. to my response
Marilee,
A couple more comments on our Christmas. Susan bought 2 Norfolk Island pines at Krogers for $8.99 each (usually ca. $50, but on very good sale--and Susan can't resist); the trees already had Christmas decorations on them. So we decided to buy more and give them to people who didn't have trees (wish
you lived closer!); so we picked out 4 more--as we went through the checkout line, Susan asked the neighbor cashier:
Sarah, do you have a Christmas tree? [She knew Sarah who is mother of retarded son that Susan cared for in group home many years ago].
No, Susan, I can't afford one.
Well, then, here's one for you; take it home.
You're joking.
No, I'm not joking.

By the time we had finished, we had bought 8 trees--and so far have given 5 away! Such fun.
Now, I also have to tell you about my Apple Quince pie recipe. Since I never keep a recipe, I went on
line to search for a recipe-and found "Five-Spice Apple Quince Pie". Now Chinese five spice includes
cinnamon, cloves, fennel seeds, star anise and peppercorns.
So I took a batch of quince, thinly sliced, and apples, thickly sliced, and half a fresh pineapple thickly
sliced and diced, and a couple limes and a couple oranges and added at least 5 spices--I know I got the
cinnamon, and I found some curry powder and ginger and orange peel; I don't know why I ignored the
cloves, fennel seeds and peppercorns as we had them too. And I honestly don't know what else I put in!
(Shoot, after 2 bottles of champagnes, who cares? Except I gave two pies to 2 people without the
champagne. I did give one a bottle of home-made plum wine--will that work as well as champagne??)
Finally, we found a song that we modified slightly to change the name from Johnny to Roger. Sing it to
the tune of The More we Get Together (Do you know that tune? I wouldn't know it if I fell over it.)
Page2 of2
Roger had a quince pie
A quince pie, a quince pie.
Roger had a quince pie
With a green worm on top.
Chorus:
A fuzzy worm, A wuzzy worm
A great big fat juicy worm,
O Roger had a quince pie
With a green worm on top.
Roger ate the quince pie,
the quince pie, the quince pie,
Roger ate the quince pie
With a green worm on top.
Roger kicked the bucket
Kicked the bucket, kicked the bucket,
Roger kicked the bucket
With a green worm on top.
Roger had a tombstone
Had a tombstone, had a tombstone,
Roger had a tombstone
With a dead green worm on top.
Like "Did You Ever See a Lassie?", its tune was taken from a 1679 Viennese tune by Marx Augustin, "Oh du lieber Augustin".
Hope this lightens your Christmas--and Kathy, I owe you a bottle of plum wine!
Love y'all. Roger
