To Madhu and Jagdish—on their 40th Wedding Anniversary
By Susan Rochat
Madhu and Jag, dear Madhu and Jag
Today is your day to smile and to brag
Forty years of togetherness—let’s raise high the flag
Tis very noteworthy—dear Madhu and Jag.
Just think of the day when you first made your vows
Of love and respect—no “ifs”, “whens”, or “hows”.
Your love made it possible to make everything right
To muster your courage, to scale any height.
Jag:
From far far away you came with a dream
To a country as different as pakoras from cream.
You studied, excelling in all that you did
Then you called for your bride from the land where you’d lived.
Madhu:
Beautiful, trusting, what courage you showed
To leave all behind and walk a new road
Without family, or possessions, you followed your heart
To a new life in America, you were ready to start.
Together you traveled life’s perilous path
Through valleys and hills you were strong and steadfast
Through sun, rain and snow you sang and you danced
Adventure you craved, and also romance!
Two children were born, Reshma and Rajen
The pride of your lives, they made things happen
You nurtured and loved and cherished the days
When they sat on your lap, and blossomed with praise.
The months turned to years and the years into decades
Blessed with wisdom, success and resounding accolades
Published works, rave reviews, all come your way
And Madhu’s the best hostess east of L.A..
Surrounded this moment by family and friends
This poem will shortly come to an end
We now raise a toast to Jag and Madhu
We wish nothing but love and contentment for you.
