Apr 19, 2005 Marilyn said August jumped on a bike and hid in the barn until we left.
Rose gave us beets we put in our dirt cellar. 3 bins in the floor. 10 foot board across. 3 ft wide. 2 ft deep. rutabagas, turnips, carrots mixed. potatoes in another. Left 1/2 the kids home. 1/2 beef on top carrier. Roger and marilee sometimes went alone with folks. Roger had paper route so couldn't go. Rog & marilyn stayed with McDole's 2 weeks. Just took roger when uncle paul died.

Anyone else have comments on August. How scary for him to go to WWI

No, I don't know more about August.
I DO remember the root cellar and the other comments from Marilyn. I also have vivid memories of Paul's funeral and of the scary trip back through the mountains--snowing so hard, dad had me walk ahead of car so he would know where the road was...!

wow, what a memory. thanks. I have gone off the road. never thought of following my child!! good idea. Did you go back through Avery?
The root cellar MB described was ours in Wallace; or Pauls?

Jan 21 RWR: ours; dug into back of bedroom with bunkbeds--I occupied the top. Do you remember it?

as I remember (!?) the door to the dug out was on the right side of back wall.
I recall you being on bottom bunk some of time and Marilyn being there some of time. Not sure I recall all this well. I remember listening to Canadian classical music on radio near my pillow (until Dad would tell me to turn it off!).
I remember helping Dad dig the dug out. can't recall if we had other help. mom may know.

Jan 20, 2009 Paul's Journal:
August left for Ste. Maries for the military at Rosecrans, California O.24.*
Snow flakes, snow on the mountain on the other side of the river O.24.
Moved Jones' apples into the cellar O.24.
Began to serve some of the coffee liquid colins for my hernia O.24.
Dot: must have been scary for August to go to San Diego. Fort Rosecrans is in San Diego, CA.

Assuming the observations of Marilyn were say, 1950, August would have been 53 so it sounds as if he were socially maladjusted. Yet in the diaries, he seems to be a very productive guy and fully involved with the family and the rigorous farm activities. Wonder if he developed problems late in life?

I never had a verbal discussion and saw him only in hiding. mom
1937 honeymoon- Al made hotcakes, flapjacks and all Rochat's at table. They thought it was wonderful. Stayed at Mark's house. Stayed in barn with Uncle Don. Aunt k was uncomfortable. didn't approve of campouts. Physically not adaptable to it. Albert was their pride and joy. Spent every summer on river and hay.
MB lists: August fell on ice on bicycle and lay on road with broken hip until Philip found him.
