December 15 we boarded Pakistan International Airlines for the flight to the Moslem country of East Pakistan. December is the month of fasting or Ramadan for the Moslems. The day Roger took us on the 1 ½ hour m motorboat ride to the field cholera lab, our boatman could eat only before sunrise or after sunset. During that day we visited places rarely seen by the white women.
Dressed in the native salvar-kameez, Susan and I were quite a curiosity to their women. Much of their life is based on obtaining food, observing religious customs, and caring for children. Our hand waving custom for good-bye means “I don’t like you” to these people. I ate my first meal with my fingers-hot lentil soup, hot curry, and cool coconut milk. Squish!!
On Dec. 19, Roger, Susan and I departed to Bangkok for two enjoyable days. Bangkok reminds me now of fresh bananas and naked bathers on the floating market ride, dancing Thai girls with long, slender curved fingernails, a maze of delicate gold temple spires, and superb Thai hair dressers. Roger and Susan went back to the States at this point and I flew to Singapore alone. (See Dot's google site) Roger & Susan flew to taiwan and perhaps bought a desk.
