This past November, the good people of the United States gathered in schools, churches, fire stations, etc, to elect the 45th president. In one of the most heated elections in recent memory, the nation choose Donald J. Trump from the Republican Party to head our great nation. Mr. Trump carried 304 of the 270 electoral votes required to win. Hillary Clinton, the Democratic Party candidate, obtained 227 electoral votes. Mr. Trump won 30 states and Mrs. Clinton pulled 20 states and the Washington District of Columbia. The popular vote, was another situation. Mrs. Clinton won 48% of the popular vote; President Trump was awarded 46%. Trump is the fifth person in U.S. history to become president while losing the nationwide popular vote. He is also the wealthiest and oldest at his time of inauguration. This election was not one without controversy, however. Protests and riots erupted in wake of Trump’s confirmation. Thankfully, a majority of the nation has accepted these election results and have moved on with their lives.
